The Labor Ministry in Jeddah plans to intensify its raids on specific city areas next week, official sources said.
The inspection campaign would focus on checking whether workers’ iqamas match their jobs and if they are working for their sponsors, the sources told Arab News.
Jeddah police officers are looking for illegal foreign workers at locations where they are likely to gather.
“The police are raiding areas under the Kilo 8 overpass and the Sitteen Street overpass where illegal foreign workers often gather,” said Lt. Nawaf Al-Bouq, spokesman for Jeddah police.
Undercover police officers also check these areas regularly, he said.
Col. Badr bin Saud Al-Saud, spokesman of the Makkah Police, said more than 106,120 violators of work and residency laws had been detained at the Shumaisi detention center on the Makkah-Jeddah Expressway since the clampdown on illegal workers started early last month.
Officials have fingerprinted 59,392 Ethiopians and 13,418 Indonesians, and deported 50,956 and 9,562 respectively.
He said the government deported most of the workers through King Abdul Aziz International Airport and the Jeddah Islamic Port.
The campaign is focusing on those who turn themselves in to the authorities, he said.
Al-Saud said the government provides detainees at the Al-Shumaisi detention center with three meals a day, and free soft drinks and snacks at reception and departure halls.
The facility operates an 800-square-meter laundry room.
