Our vanity and pride seems to know no bounds. With the efforts of the Ministry of Labor to bring in more domestic help, we have managed to sign agreements with several countries and have brought all the poor and cheap labor into Kingdom that we could find.
The ministry’s latest solution to solving the problem of the shortage of housemaids involves asking Uganda to supply domestic servants who are big enough and strong enough to silence Saudi housewives. It is only a matter of time before we start hearing stories of crimes committed by Ugandan maids, similar to the stories we have heard about Ethiopian maids.
Our streets are teeming with poor Saudi women and our souks are swarming with women beggars and there are also many spinsters for whom the chance of marriage has already passed. Halting the recruitment of housemaids from abroad will provide job opportunities for these poor women. Some of us have apparently become self-styled advocates of these poor Saudi women, but we have done nothing to provide them with an opportunity to earn a decent living.
