New Saudi film focuses on difficulties of working women:
A well-known Saudi filmmaker has just completed a movie looking at the difficulties faced by working women including gender discrimination.
Fahad Ghazoli said that “Lamar,” the 21st film of his career, is about universal issues. “Working women face troubles everywhere in the world. It’s not just happening in Saudi Arabia. It’s an international issue. I presented the pain of a working woman in my film. I hope the audience will accept this truth and like the movie,” said Ghazoli.
“I want an honest opinion from the audience. I made this film to bring about change in society. After presenting it at various film festivals and releasing it on television, I will then showcase it on YouTube for the masses,” said Ghazoli.
Ghazoli said Yaseen Al-Mughayri, who acted in the movie and helped produce it, gave him the idea to tell this story.
The film looks at the life of Lamar, a poor woman, who finds a job to look after her old and sickly father. In the workplace, she is subjected to harassment from her colleagues and the company driver. She is later fired after refusing a tempting gift from her manager.
She then faces a further dilemma when two suitors ask for her hand in marriage. One man is young, handsome and poor, while the other is old and wealthy. She has no choice but to marry the older man because her family faces eviction from their apartment. Mohammad Haneef, who wrote the screenplay and also acted in the film, said that life often does not have happy endings. “We have to make decisions based on our circumstances and culture, whether we like it or not,” said Haneef.
“Lamar can be our own sister, daughter, wife or mother. It is a female-oriented film. If we can change even one mind with this film, I will have achieved my goal,” said Haneef. Lamar was also written by Bandar Ba Jaba. The other actors include Muhammad Bakur, Malaak Tabit, Hanadi Al-Turki, Khaled AlSyed, Hana Burhan, Ibrahim Shahwaan, Zuyuf Alsharf, Alqadeer Hamdan Shalbi, Najia Alrubaya and Abdur Rehman Ezzat.\
