58% of Saudi women suffer from osteoporosis:
The incidence of osteoporosis in the Kingdom recently reached alarming levels compared to other countries, registering 58 and 32.2 percent for women and men respectively.
Dr. Hussein Al-Mohi, deputy dean of applied sciences at King Khalid University, explained that x-rays are the first step in diagnosing osteoporosis.
He elaborated further that bone density is measured by a device which uses x-rays. The device employs a special type of x-rays, which are pain-free and safe because it uses a very small amount of x-rays and does not need preparation or intravenous injection.
The doctor highlighted that the prevention of osteoporosis is more important than treatment, and it begins during youth.
Dr. Iman Al-Nashar, professor at the Faculty of Medicine at King Khalid University, explained that osteoporosis is an abnormal shortage in bone density and causes vulnerability over age.
“The natural state of the bones is similar to a sponge filled with small pores, and in case of osteoporosis the pores increase, grow and become more brittle then lose their firmness, and therefore break easily,” she said.
Al-Nashar added that women represent about 80 percent of osteoporosis cases and induce a fracture in about half of women after the age of 50 years old.
“Around 58 percent of Saudi women suffer from osteoporosis, and the rate of infection among men reaches 2.2 percent. The ratios are very high, particularly in men compared to some other communities in Europe and America,” Al-Nashar said.
Total losses incurred by the state as a result of the treatment costs for osteoporosis in the Kingdom is estimated at more than SR20 billion, and is estimated to rise to SR32 billion by 2030.
Dr. Khalid bin Owdah Al-Ahmari, dean of the faculty of Applied Sciences and head of Physical Therapy Department at King Khalid University, highlighted that there are some recommended exercises for people who suffer from osteoporosis, such as walking, using stairs, riding a bike and resistance sports using free weights and a rubber band or use of sports equipment and some exercises under water.

The volume of Saudi Arabia’s booming construction and contracting market is expected to hit $300 billion (SR1.12 trillion) by 2015, said Fahd bin Mohammed Al-Hammadi, chairman of the National Contractors Committee at the Council of Saudi Chambers.
“Construction is the Kingdom’s second largest economic sector after oil,” he said. In 2012, the sector contributed 16.5 percent of the gross domestic product compared to the private sector growth of 11.5 percent and GDP growth of 8.6 percent in current prices, he explained.
The construction sector’s total assets are valued at SR200 billion while the value of government contracts awarded in 2013 amounted to nearly SR157 billion. “We don’t have the correct figure of disrupted government projects,” he said. “We have to differentiate between delayed and disrupted projects,” he pointed out.
From the beginning of 2013 to its third quarter, the Finance Ministry sanctioned 1,855 contracts worth SR120.24 billion. “They included 627 contracts for operation, maintenance and cleaning with a total value of SR24.45 billion.”
Al-Hammadi said government contracts account for 65 percent of the sector’s activities. The number of registered contractors in the Kingdom reached about 115,000 by the end of 2013, which is 41 percent less than the figure of 2010 when it was 280,000. Among them 3,052 are classified contractors.
Firms licensed to provide contracting and maintenance services reached 3,487, which account for 77 percent of investment licenses in the Kingdom.
“The contracting sector is one of the important economic sectors in the country,” Al-Hammadi said. He expected the private sector’s contribution to nonoil GDP at 58.75 in 2013 while estimating actual growth in the sector at 8.11 percent.
About 34 percent of firms registered with the General Organization for Social Insurance are from the contracting sector with total participants reaching more than 2.17 million (40.1 percent of the total). The number of Saudis working in the sector has increased to 193,785. “There are about 300 job titles in the sector,” Al-Hammadi said.
Fawaz Al-Khodary, deputy chairman of the committee, said the construction sector was facing a lot of problems and emphasized the need for an authority to strengthen the sector. “We also need specialized centers to train workers required for the sector and a research center to conduct studies on better implementation of projects.”
Saleh Al-Habdan, chairman of the contractors committee at the Riyadh Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said they have presented proposals to resolve the problems facing the sector. This included setting up of a fund to finance contracting companies and sanctioning of more visas to recruit skilled foreign workers.

DUBAI: Here is some good news for the less privileged and patients suffering from chronic diseases. The UAE has slashed the prices of 205 drugs for different diseases of which 14 are used for diabetes.
The move follows several discussions between the Ministry of Health and different drug companies.
“The move is part of the ministry’s efforts to provide medicines at reasonable prices. A comparative study of all the drugs prices has been made covering both neighboring countries and worldwide manufacturers,” Health Minister Abdul Rahman Al-Owais said on Tuesday.
Providing drugs at reasonable prices is one of the priorities of the UAE health-care services, said Dr. Amin Hussein Al Amiri, assistant undersecretary.
“The initiative led to the reduction in prices of 14 diabetes drugs, in addition to 191 drug products for other diseases.”
He added: “The pricing system … depends on the regular analysis and amendments of drug prices according to the latest updates in the drugs market such as prices of similar drugs and economic or social factors.”

Conference in Madinah focuses on women rights:
Taibah University President Adnan Mazrou in a conference organized as part of the celebration of Madinah being declared as the cultural capital of Islam for the year 2013, said that women’s rights in Islam are bestowed on mankind by Allah the Almighty.
“Islam guarantees women their rights and the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah implements those rights endowing women with pride and honor,” Mazrou said while addressing the opening of the two-day conference on Tuesday.
In her speech Iman Azzam, vice-president of the College of Law, said that society needed to be reminded of the rights Islam has granted to women while outlining the goals and major topics to be discussed in the conference.
Rawiah bint Ahmed Al-Zehar was the winner of the Madinah Prize for research in the field of women’s rights in Islam and was honored in the inaugural session.
She had also won the Prince Naif Prize for her writings in the field of the Sunnah and contemporary Islamic studies earlier.
In his keynote speech Sheikh Saleh Al-Maghamasi pointed out that Islam gave women an important position in society as it advised men to be kind to women.
He pointed out at the outset of the meeting that no topics outside women’s material rights would be discussed such as driving or the veil adding that one needs to learn the jurisprudence of Islamic piety to understand such issues.
The Sheikh lamented that in a number of countries women have been deprived of their feminine rights and have to carry the social responsibilities of their men-folk too.
Mansour Al-Nazha chaired the first session of the forum entitled “Women’s rights in Islam — Concepts and Controls”.
In a paper presented in the first session, Khaled Al-Durais, professor of Islamic studies at the College of Education, King Saud University pointed out that the theoretical discussions about the rights of women had not brought about any improvement in the miserable lives of women in most Muslim countries and that the discussions “will never address the injustice that Muslim women have been suffering over the centuries.
“It is because women’s rights are suppressed by some deep-rooted traditions and customs that override the Shariah laws of justice, mercy and virtue,” he said.
In his paper he recommended that priority should be given to criminalize violations of women’s rights.
Nawal bint Abdul Aziz Al-Eid, associate professor of Sunnah at Noura University, stressed the need to fully implement Islamic laws on women’s rights and rescue them from the pressures of westernization and intimidations of the conservatives. The Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities Abdullah Damfo chaired the second session.

The Ministry of Labor is considering paying financial incentives to companies that provide their Saudi employees with increased salaries and other benefits.
The draft proposal states that firms must meet three conditions, including covering Saudi and non-Saudi employees with social insurance for at least 12 months, and for the firms to be in the Green or Platinum zones of the Nitaqat Program.
The third condition is that companies must have raised the salaries of their Saudi workers for six months preceding the financial aid.
The ministry stated that it would pay the incentives in line with the increase in salaries, not exceeding 15 percent of a company’s payroll or SR10 million.
The ministry stated that it regards private sector companies as major partners in helping to overcome labor market challenges in the country. It said that the Human Resources Development Fund would continue to support and incentivize private sector efforts to hire and train Saudis.
The program is entitled “Financial subsidies for firms growing the wages of Saudi workers,” and applies to new and long-term Saudi workers.

Haia chief for shorter prayer break:
The Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice (Haia) is considering shortening the time shops close for prayer, the Haia chief has said.
The period would be limited to just enough time for ablution and the actual time needed to complete a prayer, said Sheikh Abdullateef Al-Asheikh in the interview broadcast on an Arabic channel on Monday. “We would need the legislature to pass the proposed policy,” he said.
The Haia staff would do random inspections in malls to make sure people follow the new policy. He said Haia members would not chase people to pray.
“It is acceptable to perform prayers in a mall or shop in a group if the mosque is far away,” he said.
Shops across Saudi Arabia are required to close from the time of the call to prayer until the prayer is finished, which could take up to 30 minutes.
During the 35-minute TV program, Al-Asheikh toured a Riyadh shopping mall and interacted with shoppers and shopkeepers to get first-hand experience from people on the performance of his organization.
The chief said he would like his organization to do its job as envisaged by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah “with moderate and tolerant views, and avoiding hurting the feelings of the public.”
Al-Asheikh took office two years ago with a mission to improve the image of the Haia and clear away decades of public distrust and contempt.
He has revamped the Haia's administrative and field operations to regain public trust. “It was an uphill task and resistance to change was expected,” he said.
Many of the old guard lost their privileges “as I stopped accepting donations to the Haia from private businesses,” he said.
Al-Asheikh said there were staff members who wanted the Haia to take an extremist view to serve their personal interests and ideological beliefs. “I will continue with the most moderate and tolerant view to lead this organization," he said.
He said he was not bothered by foreign media calling the organization the religious police.
“We look at a set of principles to follow within the teachings of Islamic Shariah. Let them call us whatever they want,” he said. The Haia has a mission to respect people, protect them, and keep women safe from harassment, he said.
The foreign media has tried to depict the Haia as a monster “but every country has rules and systems on which it operates. The Haia doesn’t block social movement as long as it doesn’t contradict our religion and culture,” he said.
Al-Asheikh said he upheld his promise to reform the organization. “I was once on an unannounced visit to a mall and found a Haia member not displaying his badge. I asked him to leave the mall immediately,” he said.
Shoppers in the mall asked him to employ more friendly Haia members. “We feel safe with them around us,” one woman shopper told Al-Asheikh.
During his tour of the mall, he stepped into an all-female shop, but to his surprise found a salesman. “We completely support women working in women-related shops, but in a case like this, we'll give them a chance to bring in a saleswoman,” he said.
In another women’s shop, he interacted with a saleswoman who said she appreciated the Haia’s mission and the professional treatment and respect of her shop-owner.
He reiterated that the Haia staff members are not allowed to check people’s cell phones unless they suspect of being involved in harassment, drinking alcohol or drug dealing.

KSA to sign labor recruitment agreement with 6 countries:
As part of a comprehensive plan to streamline the domestic service sector, the Kingdom has decided to sign agreements with six labor-exporting countries to recruit domestic helpers.
“Labor Minister Adel Fakeih will travel to New Delhi on Wednesday to ink the new labor pact for the recruitment of domestic workers from India,” Dr. Ahmed F. Al-Fahaid, deputy labor minister for international affairs, told Arab News during an exclusive interview on Tuesday.
Al-Fahaid pointed out that “India is the second country after the Philippines to endorse a historic labor cooperation agreement for domestic workers.”
Sri Lanka will ink a similar labor pact in the Saudi capital on Jan. 14, he said. Major labor-exporting countries, such as Indonesia, Nepal, Vietnam and Cambodia, are also working closely with the Kingdom to sign the agreement in the near future, he said.
In reply to a question about other labor exporting countries intending to deploy domestic workers, he said the Labor Ministry has no plans to limit its sourcing to only seven countries.
“We have sent a similar draft agreement to Pakistan … and we are waiting for their reply,” he said, adding that the ministry will be willing to sign similar pacts with countries which intend to send domestic aides.
Asked about the salient features of the agreements that are planned to be signed with the six countries, including India, he said that the agreement will only allow hiring of domestic helpers through licensed recruitment agencies which comply with Saudi regulations and of the country deploying the domestic workers.
“The agreement with India, or for that matter any other country, is historic because this is the first time that the Saudi government intends to sign an agreement of this nature,” said Al-Fahaid, who left for India on Tuesday to make arrangements for the signing ceremony. He said the agreement offers a fool-proof protection mechanism, including insurance, especially for domestic workers.
He explained that the labor agreement to be signed with India is for a five-year term with the provision for automatic renewal after its expiry. The labor pact prohibits salary deductions from a domestic worker for any recruitment cost, and penalties will be imposed on violators, he noted. The agreement will prevent contract substitution since the Saudi government is committed to fully enforce regulations on the hiring of domestic helpers, said Al-Fahaid.
Explaining the categories of domestic aides to be covered under the new format of the agreement, he said the agreement will cover 12 categories of workers including house drivers, cleaners, housemaids, janitors, tutors and private waiters working for individuals/families. “Even a pilot working for an individual or family (other than an airline or a business) will be treated as a domestic service worker under the agreement,” he explained.
Referring to the benefits of such a model agreement to be signed by the Kingdom with labor exporting countries he said, “We are very confident that cases of abuse will reduce significantly after this agreement takes effect because the accord ensures fair and humane treatment of domestic helpers.” A 24-hour mechanism for domestic workers’ assistance will be in place within the framework of the agreement.
Al-Fahaid pointed out that the format of the agreement has changed only slightly. The agreement provides expeditious settlement of labor contract violation cases; and facilitation of exit visas for repatriation upon contract completion or during emergency situations, said the deputy minister.
There is a provision in the draft agreement that the Kingdom and the country which intends to deploy domestic workers will establish a joint committee to monitor and evaluate compliance with the provisions of the new agreement. In turn, the labor-exporting country will ensure that the domestic workers being deployed in the Kingdom are qualified and medically fit.

At his last OIC press conference on Tuesday, Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu also issued a warning that Muslim countries face severe challenges including internal clashes, extremism, the unequal status of women and poverty.
Saudi Arabia’s former Culture and Information Minister Iyad Madani is the next secretary-general of the organization. He takes charge for a five-year term today.
Ihsanoglu showed journalists a cartoon published in an Arabic newspaper in June 2005, where the OIC was depicted as a tortoise that had been turned over on its shell with people struggling to push it back onto its feet.
At the time, he had also called for the organization’s outdated 1972 charter to be overhauled, saying: “The OIC cannot participate in a Formula 1 car race with a 1972 model that has a broken engine and flat tires. We need to have a new vehicle to participate in today’s international races.”
At Tuesday’s press conference, he said the organization was now comparable to a racehorse and was playing a leading role in discussing and settling issues in the Muslim world.
Ihsanoglu said the OIC has a significant role to play in settling major international issues and needed fair representation in the United Nations Security Council to represent the sentiments of the world’s 1.6 billion Muslims.
The major activities of the OIC in January will include a meeting of the Al-Quds (Jerusalem) Committee that is meeting after a long interval in coordination with the Palestinian National Authority. The OIC is also participating in the Geneva 2 conference even though it did not participate in the Geneva 1 meeting to discuss the Syrian war.
“The OIC is now recognized as a global actor in international affairs and an agent of moderation and modernization in the Muslim world,” he said
He outlined the OIC’s various achievements including establishing relations with the United States through the US President’s special envoy to the OIC, and working toward developing institutional relations with Russia, China, the United Kingdom and France through official bilateral visits.
“All these indicate one thing — that the world’s powers and actors want to strengthen their ties with the Muslim community and now consider the OIC as the gateway to the Muslim world.”
He thanked the Ministry of Culture and Information and the leaders and people of the Kingdom for their unflinching support to the OIC..

Saudi fan faces the music for defaming crooner on Twitter:
A Saudi youth has been punished for defaming a Kuwaiti singer with false allegations of immoral conduct.
The Riyadh Criminal Court sentenced the man to three month in jail, 80 lashes and a fine of SR10,000 for posting insulting accusations against the singer Shams with photos on his Twitter and Facebook pages. The accused was on bail since August.
While the defendant said he would appeal the lower court’s verdict, Shams’ attorney said she would appeal the court’s decision because the punishment was light compared to the enormity of the man’s crime.
Shams wrote on her Twitter page that the defendant was using the ID “Ahlam’s Attorney” claiming that he used to represent the singer Ahlam on many occasions. The Arab singer Ahlam is from the UAE.
Shams added on her account that she would monitor the defamation proceedings against three other Ahlam fans.
She expressed her total trust in the Saudi judiciary and said that Ahlam would not succeed in influencing Saudi judges with insinuations against her (Shams).
Following the Kuwaiti singer’s defamation suit, the Malaz police arrested the Saudi man residing in Riyadh.
The youth accused Shams of committing adultery and posted fake photos to support his charge. Shams accused the man of trying to provoke some tribes to murder her.
While pronouncing the judgment, the court observed that the defendant could not produce any reliable proof to substantiate his accusations.
Tweeps welcomed the ruling as a sign that the police would offer protection against online predators.

Why not include Muzaffarnagar riot victims in the celebrations of Miladun Nabi:
Hyderabad, January 01:
Over 60 people were killed in the Muzaffarnagar riots. The women belonging to the minority community have been victimized through brutal rapes. Some incidents have been reported that younger girls were stripped naked in front of everyone and then burnt alive. Many girls have been kidnapped and are still missing. More than 30000 people are compelled to live in the camps in this killing cold. Some Muslim organizations and few philanthropists tried to heal the pain of riot affected people but much more needs to be done.
With the blessed month of Rabiul Awwal on the horizon we can take this opportunity to help riot affected people. There is no better occasion to rekindle the fire of love for our Prophet (pbuh). Will it not be better to cut our daily expenses and donate the savings for riot victims? Will it not be better if we celebrate Miladun Nabi in a simple way and spend the amount for Muzaffarnagar riot victims?
Persuading donations to the Muzaffarnagar victims Maulana Mufti Khaleel Ahmed said we should also include our brothers in the happiness of Miladun nabi by spending generously on them.
Maulana Mufti Abdul Mughanni Mazahari president city Jamiatul Ulama-e-Hind said we should dedicate ourselves in good deeds during these two blessed months. Bother Asifuddin Mohammed cited the example of muhajirin and ansar; when the Holy Prophet (PBUH) arrived in Madina, he declared brotherhood between the Muhajirin and the Ansar. After the establishment of the Brotherhood between the Muhajirin and the Ansar, the Ansar were eager to divide their every possession with their new brothers. Quite a few Ansar even divorced some of their wives to give to their brothers who had arrived from Makkah without their families or without their wives. We can’t go to that extent but still we can donate few rupees to bring a ray of happiness in the lives of those refugees. He said.

New Year cheer on job street: 8.5 lakh new jobs, 20% pay hike:
New Delhi, January 01:
It may rain jobs in the new year as companies are gearing up to add over 8 lakh new employees to their payrolls and dole out salary hikes of up to 20 per cent to best performers in 2014, say experts.
As per estimates of various human resource consultants, the year 2014 seems very promising for job market unlike 2013, when hirings went slow across mid and senior levels and recruitments were done only to replace 'key' gaps.
In the new year, the country is likely to witness a huge surge of opportunities for job seekers with more and more corporates investing in their businesses.
"Yes, 2014 looks bullish on hiring. 2014 will be seen as a good happening year from the jobs perspective as the global economy is improving and India being one of the largest service provider for the global market," leading executive search firm GlobalHunt MD Sunil Goel said.
According to industry estimates, over 8.5 lakh new jobs may be created in the calender year 2014. The issuance of new banking licences will be a major contributor, while IT, healthcare, agri-business, infrastructure and education sectors are also likely to witness robust hiring trends.
"Last calendar year was not good either for job seekers or for employers due to uncertain and fluctuated economical and political conditions. 2014 is coming with positive vibes for jobseekers and expecting to create 8.5 lacs new jobs in different sectors," Rajesh Kumar, CEO, MyHiringClub.com & FlikJobs.com said.
With regards to salary, the average hike for most sectors is expected in single digits, while top performers can expect pay rise of around 15-20 per cent in 2014, experts say.
"This New Year is going to bring cheer for employees with a salary hike of double-digit of at least 10-12 per cent. In 2014, companies are expected to revise the compensation package and explore a more motivational approach," Indian Staffing Federation Vice President Rituparna Chakraborty said.
"All indications are that the average increase will be around 10 per cent across the industries. However, as pressure is mounting on companies to keep its growth intact, high achievers will be getting increase better than last year, which may range between 15-18 per cent in different sectors," GHCL Ltd VP and Head-Human Resources Rajesh Tripathi said.
Echoing similar sentiments, Vdopia's spokesperson, Preetesh Chouhan, VP-APAC, believes ideally a high performer receives an incremental hike of 12-15 per cent in comparison to an average rise in salary.
According to Changeyourboss.com CEO Bhupender Mehta, sectors like services, mining,
construction and infrastructure are expected to up their hiring activities and companies are expected to give 12 per cent average salary hike.
construction and infrastructure are expected to up their hiring activities and companies are expected to give 12 per cent average salary hike.
Lighthouse Partners' Managing Partner Rajiv Burman said a new government in 2014 should emphasise on promoting growth and therefore hiring trends will also improve. The pay hikes could be 5 per cent for average performers and 10-20 per cent for high achievers, he said.
Hyderabad, December 31:
A couple of days before the Andhra Pradesh assembly is to begin a debate on the bifurcation bill, a cabinet minister from Telangana region was Tuesday divested of the legislative affairs portfolio.
Civil Supplies Minister D. Sridhar Babu, a supporter of a separate Telangana state, was also holding the legislative affairs portfolio.
In a move which evoked strong reaction from Telangana leaders, Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy handed over the legislative affairs portfolio to Primary Education Minister S. Sailajanath.
Sailajanath is heading a group of Congress leaders from Seemandhra region opposed to formation of a Telangana state. The commercial tax portfolio, which was held by the chief minister, has now been allotted to Sridhar Babu.
The change in legislative affairs portfolio is significant as the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Bill 2013 sent by President Pranab Mukherjee is to come up for debate in the assembly from Jan 3.
The chief minister, who is opposed to the state's bifurcation, was reportedly unhappy with Sridhar Babu for openly supporting the bill both in and outside the assembly.
Kiran Reddy also allotted the newly-created Telugu language development ministry to Tourism Minister Vatti Vasant Kumar.
Meanwhile, former chief of state Congress D. Srinivas has termed the change in Sridhar Babu's portfolio as undemocratic and appealed to the central leadership of the party to take serious note of this.
Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) chief K. Chandrasekhara Rao said this action by the chief minister would in no way stall the process of formation of Telangana state as under the Constitution, the state legislature has no say in bifurcation of the state

Anxiety over change of portfolios before Assembly Session:
Hyderabad, December 31:
In the wake of curiosity on Telangana Bill, C.M. of A.P. Mr. N. Kiran Kumar Reddy gave a surprise by changing the cabinet portfolio of Dr. Sridhar Babu. He has taken Parliamentary Affairs portfolio from Sidhar Babu and allotted it to Dr. Shailajanath. During the last Assembly Session, there was a rift between C.M. and Mr. Sridhar Babu. It is understood that to please Mr. Sridhar Babu, C.M. has given him the portfolio of Commercial Taxes which was earlier held by him. In addition to this change, C.M. is allotted the newly created portfolio of official language to Tourism Minister, Mr. V. Vasanth Kumar.
In political circles, suspicions are being expressed on the change of portfolios just before the commencement of the next Assembly Session. It may be noted that the Assembly session is starting on 3rd January again to discuss Telangana Bill.

December 30:
Making it clear that attacks on army and public will not be tolerated, Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif today said the government and the military were on the same page on the issue of tackling terrorists in Karachi or the restive tribal areas.
The remarks came in the backdrop of a recent limited operation launched by the army in North Waziristan.
"We will adopt coordinated strategy to root out the menace of terrorism," Sharif said while chairing a meeting in the Prime Minister's House to review anti-terror laws.
The civil administration and the military are "on the same page to tackle terrorists in Karachi, Federally Administered Tribal Areas and Provincially Administered Tribal Areas", he was quoted as saying in a statement.
There is "no space for enemy aliens to attack innocent civilians and armed forces", he said. They must be "prosecuted with effectiveness", he added.
Sharif directed officials to expedite the process of framing and promulgating anti-terror laws.
The meeting was attended by Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, army chief Gen Raheel Sharif, Chief of General Staff Lt Gen Ashfaq Nadeem, the heads of the Inter-Services Intelligence and Military Intelligence and the Interior and Law Secretaries.
Over 50 people were killed in a recent operation carried out by the army in North Waziristan Agency, a haven for the dreaded Haqqani network and al-Qaeda linked groups.
The action was launched after a suicide attack on security personnel on December 18.
Though the army claimed all the dead were terrorists, many of them foreign fighters, media reports said civilians were also killed.
North Waziristan is out of bounds for journalists and independent confirmation of the deaths was not possible.
Speculation that the army might launch a major offensive in the tribal areas has been building as the government's attempts to engage the banned Pakistani Taliban in talks have floundered in recent months.
Regime change won't affect India-Pakistan ties: Bashir:
Regime change won't affect India-Pakistan ties: Bashir:
Kolkatta, December 30:
Declining to comment on the prospect of the BJP's Narendra Modi becoming the prime minister, outgoing Pakistan High Commissioner Salman Bashir Monday said any regime change in India would not affect bilateral ties.
"We respect every leader, every political party, and it being India's internal matter, we don't have an opinion on that. The common denominator is the people of India. Therefore our reach out is to the people," Bashir told media persons here when asked to give his views about Modi, the Bharatiya Janata Party's prime ministerial candidate.
"It is not proper for me or for anybody from Pakistan to be here in India and comment either on Indian political process or any situation in any other country," he added.
With the Lok Sabha elections due in India early next year, Bashir said any change in the regime will not come in the way of the mutual ties which both the countries have been working to improve.
"I don't think that regime change really matters. The relation between states are state relations. They are not personal or party specific. It is the considered policy of Pakistan to forge friendly and cooperative relations with India."
"So your question remains relevant in terms of reciprocation and it is my sense that people of India are desirous to see better relations with Pakistan as in their own interest. That's my sense," he said.
Bashir asserted that Pakistan was a firm believer in democracy.
"In a democracy, whatever democracy delivers is something that is good and we firmly believe in that. We have had an election and democracy has delivered outstanding results in terms of stable government in Pakistan," he said.
He also rubbished allegations that Pakistan promoted terrorism and claimed: "We are at forefront in defeating terrorism."
Explosives found outside Pervez Musharraf's house:
Explosives found outside Pervez Musharraf's house:
Islamabad, December 30:
Five packets of explosives were found today near former Pakistani military ruler Gen Pervez Musharraf's farmhouse here, days after explosives were discovered on the road he was to take to a court.
According to the police, explosives were recovered from the green belt on Park Road near Chak Shahzad farmhouse.
Each packet contained around 400-500 grams of explosive material.
On December 24, explosives were recovered from 70-year-old Musharraf's route to a special court.
He was supposed to appear in the court to face treason charges for suspending, subverting and abrogating the Constitution, imposing an emergency in the country in November 2007 and detaining judges of the superior courts.
His lawyer had then said security threats had prevented Musharraf from appearing before the court.
Security personnel had found two pistols, a five-meter detonator wire as well as 16 bullets near his farmhouse when they were clearing his route to the hearing.
The Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) had arrived at the scene and diffused the bomb which was found in a briefcase. Musharraf is slated to appear before the Special Court on January 1.
Let judiciary decide Musharraf's case: Ex-servicemen:
Let judiciary decide Musharraf's case: Ex-servicemen:
Islamabad, December 30:
Top retired military officials on Monday rejected former Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf's claim that the whole army was upset with the government's move to put him on trial for treason, saying he should let the judiciary decide his case.
A joint statement issued by Pakistan Ex-Servicemen Society president Lt Gen Hamid Gul and Pakistan Ex-Servicemen Association president Lt Gen Ali Kuli Khan said the army had nothing to do with the declaration of emergency by Musharraf in 2007.
The ex-servicemen were of the view that the best course for Musharraf would be to follow the law and let the judiciary decide his case on merit. Musharraf is set to appear before a special court on January 1 to face treason charges for imposing emergency and subverting the Constitution.
The 70-year-old former army chief told reporters yesterday he had the backing of the military and the "whole army" was upset with the treason allegations.
Taking serious exception to Musharraf's remarks, the retired generals said he seemed to be trying to implicate the army as an abettor in alleged offences that amounted to a violation of constitutional provisions that cover treason.
Members of the two associations consider the declaration of emergency and sacking of judges as Musharraf's personal acts, the statement said. It further said Musharraf?s claim that the action of imposing emergency was taken by the cabinet made references to the army irrelevant.
Gul, a former Inter-Services Intelligence chief, is now a key leader of the Defa-e-Pakistan Council, a grouping of extremist organisations like the JuD.
During an interaction with reporters yesterday, Musharraf said, "I would say the whole army is upset. I have led the army from the front. "I have no doubt with the feedback that I received that the whole army is...Totally with me on this issue."
Musharraf is the first general to face treason charges in Pakistan's history. If convicted, he could face life imprisonment or the death penalty.

New year celebrations: Save your children from evil acts:
Hyderabad, December 31:
With every new second, minute, hour, day, month and year, our life is getting closer to death. There is nothing wrong in spending life cheerfully however welcoming the new year by screaming like beasts and with devilish act is uncalled for. Young boys and girls scream and dance at the new year eve at some places of our city particularly at Husain Sagar, Necklace Road etc. as if they have won a million dollar lottery. By hearing their screams it looks like devil is standing somewhere in the corner and giving a pat on their back saying you have made my day as you are inviting Allah’s wrath with these activities.
From 9 pm to 1 am such shameful acts are witnessed which can’t be put in writing. Since many years burqa-clad girls are also seen at those places brazenly celebrating the new year. Several young boys are seen at hospital beds of emergency wards of Osmania hospital and Gandhi hospital in the night of 31st December every year. Thousands of rupees are charged for simple operations these days. In this situation parents should keep an eye on their children on December 31st lest they lose them forever. They should not give vehicles to them as reckless driving tantamount to inviting death. Parents should keep vigilance on the eve of new year 2014 or else the new year day could turn into the worst day of their life.

Some of the workers violated visa regulations intentionally, while the rest were cheated by their sponsors.
They were deported after being released from the Abha detention centre in Asir province on Thursday, Arab News reported.
Four of them flew home Friday morning.
"Of a total of 22 Indian inmates in the Abha detention center, only seven are eligible to return home," said Indian social worker Ashraf Kutichal.
The Abha chapter of the Overseas Indian Cultural Congress paid 1,000 Saudi riyals (around USD 265) each for the release of the expatriates as penalty for not being in possession of a valid "Iqama", a residency permit for expatriates in Saudi Arabia.
Ashraf said the remaining 15 face various charges and would not be allowed to leave the country.
"We are very happy going back home. We faced a lot of difficulties...It was very cold inside the deportation centre, especially at night," one of the workers said.
Mohammed Shamsuddin from Andhra Pradesh said, "I was going to the labour court to show my passport which I finally received from my sponsor but without an exit stamp. I was suddenly apprehended by the security patrols who brought me to the deportation centre where I have spent 55 days."

Woman gives birth to stillborn at Muzaffarnagar relief camp:
December 29:
A riot victim, staying at a relief camp in neighbouring Shamli district, reportedly gave birth to a still-born baby, with her family alleging that inadequate prenatal treatment was provided to her.

The family have been staging protest at the camp since the incident and have demanded strict action.
On contacting, the health centre's superintendent Ramesh Chandra said an inquiry into the incident has been ordered.
Meanwhile, 24 pregnant women have been identified in Muzaffarnagar district in Loi camp by the administration.

The camp at Loi presently houses more than 2,000 riot victims of which approximately half are children.
Sixteen deaths have taken place at the camp due to ailments and medical causes.

Kumar Vishwas challenges Modi to contest against him:
New Delhi, December 29:
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Kumar Vishwas confirmed on Sunday that he will contest Lok Sabha election from Amethi and challenged Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)''s Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to contest against him.
Speaking at a news conference here, Vishwas took a swipe at Narendra Modi and said: “I will be going to Amethi because the people of that area want to challenge the concept of dynastic politics. The people of Amethi want me to contest from that area, which is why I am going there.
" “I will also appeal to Narendra Modi that he should not speak about Rahul Gandhi for 50 minutes in his one-hour speeches.,,,,,. If he really wants Rahul Gandhi relinquish his reign from Amethi, let him himself contest from Amethi..
Let Rahul Gandhi, me and Modi contest from Amethi and let people see who wins," said Vishwas. However, his comments did not go down well with other political leaders in India. A BJP lawmaker, Kirti Azad, said India gives everyone the right to contest from more than one place.
Exercising that factor, Vishwas can contest from wherever he wants. "Why should Kumar Vishwas contest from one place? He can contest from two and so can the people from his party. Every individual in India, whether or not associated with a political party, can contest in the elections. Why doesn''t he say that he will also contest from Darbhanga," he said.
Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief, Lalu Prasad Yadav, said there is no competition for a person with the stature of Rahul Gandhi. "In front of Rahul Gandhi, people like Arvind Kejriwal and Narendra Modi are nothing. Rahul Gandhi is Rahul Gandhi.
The kind of thing people like Narendra Modi did, what is that? You have given them the mileage," said Yadav. Speaking candidly on the entire issue, a leader of Janata Dal-United (JD-U), Sabir Ali, called Vishwas loud-mouthed and said he should refrain from making such statements. "This is being loud-mouthed. If you win 28 seats in Delhi, it does not mean that you will rule the entire country. In any case, Kumar Vishwas is habitual of being loud-mouthed. He crosses the limits. He even lacks the decency of talking on camera. He forgets what our culture is. In spite of being a poet and a writer, he does not know what culture and tradition is," said Ali. (ANI)

Believe it nor not, the Riyadh Traffic Department recently registered 12,000 violations in a span of 24 hours.
The mind-boggling number of violations has sent alarm bells ringing in the department.
Traffic cops have blamed the high rise in accidents on people who drive cars while talking on cell phones.
A report in July said that 1.4 million traffic violations, including speeding and ignoring traffic signals, were registered in the first half of this year, while 2.6 million traffic offenses were registered last year.
The Riyadh traffic police have started monitoring and penalizing motorists who are stuck to their phones while driving.
The campaign against phone users at the steering wheel is one of the measures being implemented by the traffic department.
Col. Ali Abdullah Al-Dubaikhi, Riyadh traffic director, said the campaign is in its second week. “We are strictly implementing traffic safety regulations and also trying to raise awareness among citizens and expatriates alike,” he said.
He said that 73 checkpoints have been set up on various roads and intersections in the capital. These are in addition to the more than 90 traffic patrols deployed at major intersections.

Expat pilgrims turned away at border post:
Expatriates from neighboring Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries entering into the Kingdom to perform the Umrah pilgrimage in private vehicles are being turned away by Saudi security officials at border posts.
Many Asian and Arab expatriates working in the UAE, Kuwait and Qatar come to the Kingdom to visit religious sites by car since it is more cost-efficient.
A group of expatriate pilgrims in Dubai obtained Umrah visas from the Saudi Consulate in the UAE, but were turned away by Saudi authorities at the border near Hofuf on Thursday night.
Mohammed Rashad Ali, an Indian expatriate living in Dubai, told Arab News on Friday: “We obtained Umrah visas from the Saudi Consulate here, but were not allowed to enter Saudi territory to proceed to Makkah in our own car.”
Ali said that he and his friends and relatives had to return to Dubai while still in “ihram” (attire worn for performing pilgrimage) and booked a Jeddah-bound flight instead.
He said that if they had known of the change in rules, they would have planned accordingly. The tour operator whom they contacted for clarification said that he was “unaware of any such restriction.”
Haj Ministry spokesperson Ali Al-Ghamdi told Arab News that the ministry had not imposed any conditions on the mode of transport to be used by pilgrims coming from GCC countries. “We have no idea if any other ministry or agency has created any such rule,” he added.
The Passport Directorate in the Eastern Province, which shares borders with member GCC countries, however, confirmed that there were some restrictions on expatriate pilgrims arriving by road from GCC countries.
Col. Muala Al-Otaibi, a spokesperson for the Passport Directorate in the Eastern Province, told local media that expatriate pilgrims are not allowed to enter the Kingdom in private vehicles and that the new measures stipulate that modes of transportation be approved by Umrah companies.
There were earlier reports stating that a group of “Bidoun” (Arabic for stateless persons) pilgrims from Kuwait were stopped at the Raqi checkpoint on the Saudi border and were turned away for the same reason.

The Kingdom’s religious police have warned the public against celebrating the New Year’s Eve, an Arabic newspaper reported on Sunday.
The Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vices (Haia) based its warning on a religious edict issued by the Council of Senior Islamic Scholars banning such celebrations, the newspaper said.
Haia officials tour markets across the Kingdom to prevent the sale of red roses and other things used for celebrating New Year.

Communal tension gripped in Madannapet last night:
New Saher cameras can detect hidden numbers:

The Ministry of Interior is studying locations in various cities and towns in the Kingdom that pose danger to traffic to install Saher monitoring cameras, said Maj. Gen. Abdul Rahman Al-Miqbel, director general of traffic police.
“After finalizing the locations, new cameras will be installed shortly,” he told reporters after inspecting the traffic police headquarters in Yanbu. He said the traffic police is determined to install cameras at all major intersections in the Kingdom.
He said more than 7,000 people lose their lives each year in road accidents in Saudi Arabia and another 35,000 are injured with 50 percent of them disabled for life. “This causes great loss to the nation,” he said.
Al-Miqbel said the Saher system has helped reduce road fatalities in the Kingdom and authorities are aiming to expand it to more areas.
Meanwhile, authorities have introduced advanced technology in Saher to ensure detection of traffic violation and identification of vehicle registration number and capturing the face of the driver. The new cameras are being installed at selected traffic signals in Dammam, Alkhobar and Hail. Later, such high-tech cameras will be installed in other parts of the Kingdom.
The locating plate recognition (LPR) system sensors are able to detect the actual number of registration plate even if it is tampered with or covered by paint or sticker or any other means to hide the original number. With this feature, the traffic police can effectively nab the offenders.
Besides major cities, the traffic police is installing cameras on highways to detect speed violations.
All parts of Kingdom are expected to be brought under the Saher lens by 2018.

Musharraf says army still backs him in treason case:
Islamabad, December 29:
Embattled former military ruler Pervez Musharraf today said treason case against him smacks of a "vendetta" and dismissed the notion that Pakistan's powerful army has abandoned him in his legal battle.
"I have led my men at Brigadier level and as Chief. Ask the 6.5 lakh personnel," Musharraf said when asked if the army had abandoned him.
He said he had led the army as a leader and not the commander. "The real leadership is without the stars on your soldier. Remove it and then see if your men actually listen to you," Musharraf said in an interview to ARY news channel.
He said the 6.5 lakh-strong army had not abandoned him.
He said the 6.5 lakh-strong army had not abandoned him.
In a media interaction at his sprawling farmhouse here, Musharraf said that the treason charges against him has upset the army. He said the manner in which his case has been handled "smacks a little bit of vendetta."
"I would say the whole army is upset...I have no doubt with the feedback that I received that the whole army is... totally with me on this issue," Musharraf was quoted as saying by media here.
In an earlier interview to the ARY, the 70-year-old had sought "forgiveness" for any wrongs he may have committed during his nine-year rule and said he will face all cases against him and not run like a coward.
Musharraf is set to appear before a special court on January 1 on treason charges.
The special court was set up by the Nawaz Sharif government to try the former military ruler for high treason for suspending the constitution in 2007.
The former president is charged with abrogating, subverting, suspending, holding in abeyance and attempting to conspire against the 1973 Constitution by declaring emergency and overthrowing the judiciary in November 2007.
On November 17, the government decided to initiate treason proceedings against Musharraf, who came to power in 1999 by toppling a government led by Sharif and ruled till 2008 when he was forced to resign after being threatened with impeachment.
He lived in self-exile for about five years and returned to Pakistan in March to contest elections but was hauled to court in different cases, including one over the 2007 assassination for former premier Benazir Bhutto.
This is the first time in Pakistan's history that a military ruler has been put on trial for treason. If convicted, he could face life imprisonment or death penalty.
The military, which has ruled Pakistan for more than half of its 66-year history, has not commented on Musharraf's case.
Musharraf has secured bail in four major cases against him but the trial for treason poses the biggest challenge to the former army commando.

Khan's party threatens to demolish wall of Zardari's home:
Karachi, December 29:
A large contingent of security forces surrounded former Pakistan President Asif Zardari's private residence here on Saturday after Imran Khan's party said it would launch a campaign to demolish a wall outside the building.
Policemen and paramilitary troops surrounded Bilawal House, named after Zardari's son, to avert a possible clash between workers of Khan's Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf party and the Pakistan People's Party.
Hundreds of workers of the Tehrik-e-Insaf and PPP began assembling outside Bilawal House this evening. To reduce tensions, authorities opened one side of the road that had been blocked for years for security reasons.
"We have opened one side of the road for normal use and set up CCTV cameras for security purposes. There is a large contingent of police to avert any clash," police officer Aamir Farooqi said.
Khan's party announced yesterday it intended to demolish the wall outside Bilawal House, which it claimed hampered normal life and traffic.
The party said it would organise a protest near Bilawal House and demolish the high wall built when Zardari was the President.
Zardari completed his five-year term earlier this year. The PPP was routed in the general election but it is power in southern Sindh province.
PPP leader Najmi Alam warned there would be clashes if workers of Khan's party try to bring down the wall forcibly.
"The Bilawal House is the residence of our martyred leader Benazir Bhutto and we will not tolerate anyone trying to create problems or play politics with it," he said.
Tehrik-e-Insaf parliamentarian Arif Alvi claimed the wall was built illegally and the Sindh High Court had ordered its demolition. "We are just following court orders," he said.
Alvi claimed security arrangements outside Bilawal House were illegal and a source of nuisance for local residents. "This is not politics, this is about people's rights. The protests will continue tomorrow and eventually this wall will come down," he said.
Bhutto, who headed the PPP when she was assassinated in 2007, had moved to Bilawal House after her marriage to Zardari though the official residence of the Bhutto family is 70 Clifton in another part of the same area.

The former military ruler is facing five charges against him for imposition of emergency rule in November 2007, and if found guilty he could face the death penalty or life imprisonment.
An initial hearing in the case, being heard by a special tribunal, was halted on December 24 after explosives were found along the route Musharraf was to take to court, the report added.
The case is due to resume on January 1, but Musharraf said he had not yet decided whether he would attend the hearing. (ANI)

Muzaffarnagar, December 29:
Rashtriya Janata Dal ( RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav on Sunday visited the Muzaffarnagar riot victims camps and said the communal forces are trying to divide the country on religious lines and have targetted the Uttar Pradesh.
Lalu who is on a surprise visit to the relief camps, said, "I got news about the riots in Muzaffarnagar through T.V. The whole country's attention was on Muzaffarnagar. We all, secular people, are making an effort to stop the communal forces from dividing this country on religious lines.
Apparently referring to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, Lalu said, "The man, who belongs to Hindi speaking state and possesses a desire to sit on the crown of Hastinapur, has targetted the Uttar Pradesh, India's largest state, where the government is an also secular one."
" Narendra Modi , BJP and Sangh Parivar are all dividing this country. Modi's general manager Amit Shah was here and instigated these riots. These people are trying to communalise the whole country and the society," he added.
"Earlier all the people from Muslim and Hindu communities used to work here in peace. Then these riots took place. I am not blaming anyone but I think there was lack of response from the government. They should help the people who have suffered in these riots," he said.
"In our Parivartan Rally in Bihar, we told people clearly that the people of this country have to decide, whether they want the country to be united or to be divided after the 2014 general elections," he added. (ANI)
