The Saudi Railways Organization (SRO) has awarded Saudi Arabian Railways (SAR) the operational license to transport phosphate from Al-Jalamid mine, Northern Province, to Ras Al-Khair Port, Eastern Province.
SRO President Mohamed bin Khalid Al-Suwaiket said the operational license will empower the company to operate four trains to transport phosphate on the North-South Railways (NSR) from Al-Jalamid mine to Ras Al-Khair. The 1,486 km-long train line will pass through a number of warehousing areas and junctions, he said.
Based on SAR’s data, the project, formerly known as the North-South Railways (NSR), is the largest railway project in the world that is currently under construction.
On completion, the SAR project will be approximately 2,750 km-long.
The project consists of two main lines, one originating in Riyadh and running northwest toward Al Haditha near the Jordanian border. This line will pass through Majma’a, Qassim, Hail and Al-Jouf.
The second main line will run from Al-Jalamid mine in the Northern Province, pass through Al-Jawf and Hail till a point referred to as “AlBaithah Junction” in Qassim province. It will then proceed eastward to the processing and export facilities in Ras Al-Khair in Eastern Province.
