The bomber jacket, also known as the flight jacket or bombardier jacket, was first created during World War I to keep pilots warm while flying as most airplanes didn't have an enclosed cockpit.
In 1917, the Aviation Clothing Board was established by the United States for creating and distributing leather jackets for pilots, complete with fur lining, high collars, snug cuffs and waists and zippers.
What started as a necessity evolved into a fashion statement, especially with the help of Hollywood flick, Top Gun.
